DATURA

This elegant and beautiful Datura stramonium (jimsonweed) has closed
for the day, having been open from dusk to mid-morning. A member, along
with the potato, of the Deadly Night Shade Family (Solanaceae), it is
also known as Yerba del Diablo, or Reina de la Noche due to its
powerful, and sometimes deadly hallucinogenic properties. The Zuñi
name is Toloache, from the Nahuatl word Toloatzin.
I found this one growing in Thea's garden last summer, in Taos. |

ESCARAMUZA CHARRA

Escaramuza, or skirmish, the women's precision side saddle equestrian
drill team competition, is a favorite part of the Charreria, or Mexican
rodeo. This "confection" is from my visit
to Apaseo el Grande in the state of Guanajuato, in 2006.

EVENING, VEJER

On my own after a week of teaching in Jerez and Sevilla, I rented a car
and started a week long tour of los Pueblos Blancos, the white villages,
of Andalucia in Southern Spain. I pulled into the pueblo of Vejer de la
Frontera late on the first evening, found a nice, small hotel, checked
in and dashed up to the roof for a series of shots as the sun set over
this beautiful site. |
