JILL'S POCO NAVAJO DREAMING TWO PAINTS

THE MEETING

Tuesday, March 21, 2006

And make it she will! Thea's progress has been remarkable. Her doctor says so, her therapist says so, and I certainly agree. She's walking very well, although she tires rapidly. The pain has been, for the most part, well contained, and, of course, she can look forward to its lessening; the opposite of the pain she felt before the surgery. She's anxious to get back to work, and, in fact, is already managing to do some work from here.

Wednesday, March 01, 2006

Thea, my lovely wife, willing partner, and best friend, Director of  Farnsworth Gallery Taos, underwent double knee replacement on Monday, at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque. The surgery went very well, and, according to her doctor, her muscles and tendons are strong and in good shape, meaning that her recovery should be swift and complete.

Thanks to all for your encouragement, prayers and good whishes.

02:35pm  Thea just walked again for the first time. She made it to the hallway and back, with a giant grin on her face!!! I'm going to make it, she said.

WESTERN TRADITIONS: is a beautifully presented new book on the art of the American West, an art that attracts not only great artists but passionate collectors, not only nostalgia buffs who revel in the history of the frontier but pragmatists who know that life of the working cowboy is a solid reality in today’s ranching industry.

COVER IMAGE: Tom Ryan: Red Dirt Country (detail), Oil, 17 x 20"

Here are some excerpts from the book, WESTERN TRADITIONS:

The university of life attracts some of the world’s most devoted art students. John Farnsworth has surely earned a handful of doctorates in that demanding institution. Rather than conform to the mold of a limited curriculum, he has given himself an independent and far-reaching art education that is refreshingly free of competitive dogma.

He paints whatever in the world interests him, and his interests constantly renew themselves. His renowned horse paintings express ever-evolving perceptions and a profoundly free spirit. By experimenting with a limited palette and unorthodox cropping, among other innovations, he continually breaks new ground in composition, perspective, and color.

He is truly a crossover artist, bridging the gap between traditional and contemporary Western art. Varied though his paintings are, they are instantly recognizable as Farnsworth’s own. Behind every canvas is a sharp intellect, a ready sense of humor, and a world view based in equal parts on tireless observation, imagination, and work.

A mix-up in mediums caused this earlier version, LONGHORN BULL, to dry too slowly, so, in order to meet the agreed upon deadline, I painted the second version, which went to the hotel. Wow. Old pieces are coming out of the woodwork.

Like this lovely old Navajo Lady. I called her Birdlady because she was so small and bird-like. A real Shema-Saani, little grandmother. Lance Wright of Phoenix sent me this image of a brush drawing in oil that belonged to his father, my good friend Don Wright in Flagstaff, whose photographs graced many Arizona Highways Magazines. There's a picture Don took of me painting down inside Oak Creek Canyon on the Bio page. It's a real treat for me to see these early works. If you have any, please send them my way. I'm going to put up an early days page, soon, and would love to include your images. Thanks, Lance.

MINI PRINTS

Because so many young and beginning collectors have expressed an interest in posters, which we don't do, I've decided to make these beautiful, archival quality images available at prices comparable to posters. They are great as decorative accents whether used individually or in groups. As with all John Farnsworth's art, they are "paintings you can live with". Burnished Red Italian frames are the perfect compliment to these beautifully matted Mini-Prints.
