The
experts have labeled this Kachina a Kweo, or Wolf Kachina. Having been
face to face with a Mountain Lion on a moonless night, however, I prefer
to think of it as a Mountain Lion Kachina.
These
are Wolf, or Kweo, Kachinas. To me the complete lack of a snout is an
indication that the Kachina above is something other than Kweo. Because
each of the Hopi Villages features different versions of each Kachina,
and because of differences due to time and individuality among
carvers, it is often difficult to accurately identify a doll.
