It is true no one could print my negatives as I did, but they might well get more out of them by electronic means. Image quality is not the product of a machine, but of the person who directs the machine, and there are no limits to imagination and expression."

  DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

I've been taking photographs all my life, but never had an affinity for dark rooms and smelly chemicals.

DIGITAL VIDEO: CLICK FOR INFORMATION

When I first started painting, I refused to carry a camera. I wanted to get a direct and immediate impression without the delay of going through a photograph. I was interested in painting the subject, not the photo.

I soon realized, however, that I was missing a great deal, especially when traveling.

For the painter, a photograph, like a sketch is merely a means to an end.

It could serve as a reminder of a place, a time, or an event, or as a record of facts, observations and details, Used properly, it could do much more of all of this in much less time.

The trick is to use the camera as a tool, not as a crutch.

DIGITAL VIDEO: CLICK FOR INFORMATION

I started out using an old Polaroid camera that I'd had for years, but it was an early model that took very small pictures and was fairly expensive to use.

Then I bought a used Yashica Super 8mm movie camera.

It had a cable release, and that enabled me to shoot hundreds of tiny still images on a single roll of film.

I had to wait for processing, of course, and the images had to be viewed on a clunky little film editor with about a two inch square screen. But I could get so much more inspiration, and it would last until I was able to get to it.

I could even shoot through the window of a moving car! And when I got into a situation where the action was too fast for single frame, I could shoot in short movie bursts.

I still wasn't getting much detail, of course; but, instead, fleeting impressions, sudden, unexpected, and fresh ways of seeing and remembering things.

To be continued soon...
